When we released the visuals for Compelled by the Spirit at the beginning of the year, something happened that almost never happens. I was asked by a church member, why the flag and why the water? Is there a significance to these visual choices?
Somehow it never occurred to me that people may want to know why we make the choices we make to represent the vision behind a graphic.
So I have consolidated multiple emails, group texts, passing conversations, and a lot of details nobody but our team would probably ever see as significant (is this blue color too blue, does the font feel too “fun,” is that image of a deer too ”hunting season”?) into a simple explanation.
First, the flag.
When Pastor Neil was sharing his heart on Compelled by the Spirit, he had this to say:
“Some ideas that are important to this are found in 2 Timothy 4:7 and 1 Corinthians 9:24 about finishing the race and the prize for which God has called us. Being Compelled by the Spirit means that we will finish well and see the ultimate goal of people finding Christ and thriving in the way He intended. To see the tape and to be driven to go after God’s presence is all included in ‘compelled’.”
The flag symbolizes reaching the ultimate goal and finishing the race He has called us to.
Second, the water.
Genesis 1:2 says, “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
Existence began with the Spirit of God. The visual of water and the Spirit is used throughout Scripture.
In Isaiah 44:3–4 the Lord says, “For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and My blessing on your descendants.”
And again in Joel 2:28, “It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind . . .”
God promises again and again to pour out His Spirit, as water in a desert, bringing restoration and peace by the power of His Spirit. We cannot reach our ultimate goal—to have victory and finish the race well—unless we walk in step with His Spirit.
